The size of Yemen has been reported as 555,000 square kilometers, as stated on Google and Wikipedia, but a personal investigation using Google Maps yielded a significantly smaller area of 456,000 square kilometers, including all islands such as Socotra. After researching, it was discovered that the discrepancy may have originated from a 1991 statistical yearbook published by Yemen's Central Statistical Office, which possibly overstated the country's size for propaganda purposes by extending its northern border beyond the actual 19th latitude to the 20th latitude, prior to the clear demarcation of its border with Saudi Arabia in 2000.
