The concept of "malleable software" aims to restore user agency in a world where apps are often locked down and unchangeable, forcing users to adapt their workflows to fit the software. This vision envisions tools that can be easily reshaped by users to suit their unique needs, with modification becoming a routine process. To achieve this, the current computing landscape, which assumes users are passive recipients, must be transformed to invite users to become active co-creators. This can be done by developing systems that support custom workflows, communal creation, and local groups, drawing inspiration from research and commercial products over the past few decades, and learning from prototype testing to create a more user-centric and adaptable software environment.
