A developer has successfully reverse engineered the undocumented Mikey chip in the iPod Classic's inline remote, enabling the use of the play/pause and volume buttons on Apple's wired earbuds for users running Rockbox on their device. Despite Rockbox being available on the iPod Classic since 2011, the earbud remote functionality had never been implemented due to lack of documentation and prioritization. The developer has now published a prebuilt Rockbox image with the remote driver, which works on the iPod Classic 6G and 7th gen, allowing for play/pause and volume control on every screen, including menus, and is compatible with the hold switch.
