The new name, chosen after a one-and-a-half-year selection process, is an abbreviation of "Nuraghe", ancient granite structures in Sardinia, Italy, symbolizing stability and longevity. The rebranding was done to simplify outreach and improve memorability, as the original name was often difficult to pronounce and remember in various languages. The project's goal remains the same, to keep devices running the OS useful for a long time, and the new name is intended to better reflect this mission.
