The field of computer graphics education is facing challenges due to the vast capabilities of modern Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), which have expanded beyond just rendering graphics to general parallel programming. To address this, professors are adopting a "scaffolded learning" approach, where students are provided with templates and frameworks that hide complex details, allowing them to make progress without being overwhelmed by the underlying graphics APIs. As students learn more, the scaffolding is gradually removed, revealing the initially hidden complexities, making it easier for them to get started with GPU programming, such as with compute shaders in p5.js, without requiring thousands of lines of code.
